In pre-kindergarten, junior kindergarten and kindergarten, the Bible curriculum is arranged in engaging monthly units. Some examples of the units are Forgive Others, God's Promises, and The Miracles of Jesus. Each month a "Big Truth" and Bible memory verse are the anchors for the Bible stories that are learned.
Bible instruction in first - fourth grade is taught chronologically through the entire Bible. The sequential teaching of the Bible, the use of varied learning activities, along with scripture memorization and in-depth discussions enable students to apply God's Word in their daily lives and defend their faith.
In fifth grade, students participate in a yearlong apologetics course. Students are prepared and armed for the world through questioning, dialogue, diving into the Word, discovering the Truth, and scripture memorization.
Junior kindergarten lays a foundation in prerequisite mathematical concepts like number sense, geometry, measurement, and patterns, for future learning success. Varied group instruction, hands-on learning activities and games, and exploration through play are utilized to solidify these skills.
The instructional methods in kindergarten - fifth grade involve a progression of learning math concepts through a concrete-pictorial-abstract approach. The hands-on and visual engagement allows all students to experience success in mathematical principles, and become critical thinkers and problem solvers.
All science instruction and reading materials in pre- kindergarten - fifth grade is presented from a biblical worldview. As students participate in the content reading, activities, experiments, and discussions, they are always directed back to see how science confirms the Bible to be the Truth.
Students in kindergarten - fifth grade learn about historical events from a biblical perspective. In addition, they have opportunities through additional readings, research, and projects to investigate and evaluate events in view of Scripture.
Through consistent, systematic daily instruction in phonological awareness and phonics students in junior kindergarten build a foundation for learning the skills necessary to decode and encode words. In the lower elementary, students will acquire the skills necessary to decode and encode words through systematic daily instruction in phonemic awareness and phonics. Upper elementary phonics instruction is a word study approach where lessons focus on sequenced spelling patterns and meaning principles. The focused-word pattern for each study is taught and facilitated through a structured routine.
Early emergent literacy skills are the focus for reading in junior kindergarten with the goal of building a solid foundation for literary success. Some of these essential qualities include: phonological awareness and phonemic awareness; print awareness; letter-sound knowledge and fluency; and, building vocabulary and background knowledge. Lower and upper elementary students engage in teacher-led read alouds and independent reading. The reading selections, including both fiction and nonfiction, for each grade are paired with science and social studies content topics allowing for deeper connections in learning. Students participate in daily structures to work on comprehension skills, including: building vocabulary, identifying and understanding figures of speech, organizing events or information, and making connections. Most importantly, students are given ample opportunities and encouraged to think deeply about literary topics, including themes, morals, and character qualities, through the lens of God's Word. Jesus taught through story; therefore, the Bible is used as the source for seeking Truth on topics or ideas found in the literature.
The primary focus for writing at the beginning is on building and strengthening fine motor skills needed to properly write; thereafter, integrating letter and number formation. Additionally, students write in meaningful ways using a combination of drawing, dictation, and writing. In kindergarten - fifth grade, writing instruction consists of explicit sequential lessons in both organizational skills and artistic style, within a variety of forms.
